Llevaban seis años siendo inseparables cuando algo <span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="started to change" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">empezó a cambiar</span>.

<span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="Can you believe it?" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">¿Puedes creerlo?</span>

—Ah... ¡qué bien! Me alegro mucho.
Cuando Rodrigo cumplió veintiuno, Vera <span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="she invited him to dinner" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">lo invitó a cenar</span> para celebrarlo.

Rodrigo, en cambio, empezó a <span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="to feel lonely" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">sentirse solo</span>.
Vera estaba en Londres y <span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="she seemed happy" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">parecía feliz</span>.
¡<span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="I'm going back" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">Me vuelvo</span> a España!
Estaba nervioso.
—¡Rodrigo! —gritó Vera abrazándolo—. <span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="Long time no see!" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">¡Cuánto tiempo!</span> Te presento a Daniel. Es mi novio.
—Encantado —dijo Rodrigo.
Pero cuando <span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="he dropped them off at home" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">los dejó en casa</span> y se quedó solo en el coche, cerró los ojos y lloró.
Rodrigo intentó olvidarla. Pero todavía pensaba en Vera.
Con Vera seguía hablando <span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="from time to time" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">de vez en cuando</span>, pero <span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="it wasn't the same anymore" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">ya no era lo mismo</span>.
—¿No?
—Rodrigo, ¿me oyes?
<span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="They keep kissing" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">Se quedan besándose</span> durante mucho tiempo. Now they were thirteen years old, and Vera looked at Rodrigo in a different way.
She started to get nervous when she was with him and to think about him when he wasn’t there.

Rodrigo was stunned.
—¿Londres? Pero eso está muy lejos.
“London? But that’s very far away.”
—Sí, pero es una oportunidad muy buena.
“Yes, but it’s a very good opportunity.”
—Ya, claro. Me alegro mucho por ti, Vera. De verdad. Pero... ¿qué voy a hacer yo sin ti?
“Yeah, sure. I’m really happy for you, Vera. Really. But... what am I going to do without you?”
—No seas tonto —dijo Vera—. Nos vamos a llamar todos los días.
“Don’t be silly,” said Vera. “We’re going to call each other every day.”
Vera went to London, and at first they talked on the phone every day.
But Vera was very busy with her new life, and little by little she called less and less, until she stopped calling.
For her, what she felt for Rodrigo was a thing of the past.

They sat down in a café, and Vera said to him:
—Daniel me ha pedido matrimonio.
“Daniel has asked me to marry him.”
—Enhorabuena, Vera —dijo Rodrigo intentando sonreír.
“Congratulations, Vera,” said Rodrigo, trying to smile.
—¿Por qué me das la enhorabuena? No he dicho que sí.
“Why are you congratulating me? I haven’t said yes.”
—¿No? ¿Por qué?
“No? Why?”

“Vera, you can’t ask me that.”
—Te lo estoy preguntando, Rodrigo.
“I’m asking you, Rodrigo.”
Rodrigo looks at her the way he looked at her when he was thirteen, and he doesn’t say anything.
—Rodrigo, ¿me oyes? ¿Me caso con Daniel o no?
“Rodrigo, do you hear me? Should I marry Daniel or not?”

Because there are people who are made to be together. Sometimes it just takes them a little while to find each other.
Question 1
Your friend asks about Vera and Rodrigo as children. Reply in Spanish: As children, Vera talked a lot, but Rodrigo was very shy. They met on the first day of school.
In Latin America, people often say escuela instead of colegio.
- "As children" is de pequeños or de niños: de pequeños, Vera hablaba mucho. Como niños means "like children", so it's wrong here.
Question 2
You meet Rodrigo after he picks Vera up at the airport. Ask him in Spanish: What time did you arrive? Were you nervous? Have you talked to Vera this week?
Example: ¿A qué hora llegaste? ¿Estabas nervioso? ¿Has hablado con Vera esta semana?
Notes:
- Llegaste is the moment. Estabas is how you felt while you waited.
Question 3
Vera's mother asks you: Did you know it? Answer in Spanish: Yes. When they were children, they did everything together. I have always known it.
Example: Sí. Cuando eran niños/pequeños, hacían todo juntos. Siempre lo he sabido.
Notes:
- "Everything" is todo: hacían todo juntos. Keep todo even next to juntos. "Hacían todos juntos" is wrong.
- Lo is "it": siempre lo he sabido. It goes before he.
Question 4
Translate to Spanish: At first, Rodrigo and Vera talked every day. Vera was very busy. Last year, she stopped calling. This year, they have not spoken.
Notes:
- Let the time words choose. Todos los días goes with hablaban. El año pasado goes with dejó. Este año goes with han hablado.
Question 5
Translate to Spanish: One afternoon, Vera and Rodrigo meet at a café. Vera asks Rodrigo a difficult question. Rodrigo looks at her and doesn't say anything. Then he slowly gets closer to her and kisses her.
Notes:
- Spanish stories often jump to the present for the big moment, just like movies: se acerca a ella y la besa.
- In Spanish, you "make" a question: le hace una pregunta. Le pregunta algo difícil also works. "Le pregunta una pregunta" is wrong.
Question 6
You are Vera. Tell Rodrigo in Spanish: When I was fourteen, I was in love with you. I decided to tell you the truth, but you were going out with María. When I came back from London, I hadn't seen you for five years. I have never told you this.
Example: Cuando tenía catorce años, estaba enamorada de ti. Nunca te he contado/dicho esto.
Notes:
- Salías and estabas saliendo both work: pero tú salías con María.
- "I hadn't seen you for five years" is hacía cinco años que no te veía: it's hace... que, moved into the past.
Welcome to a friendship that lasts twenty-seven years! Step into Vera and Rodrigo's world, then tell the whole story to a friend who keeps saying they're "just friends."
Daniel's Big Question
You're Daniel's friend. Over a coffee, he tells you he's going to ask Vera to marry him.
Your task - chat with Daniel about his plan:
- React with surprise and say it's great news.
- Ask him how he met Vera.
- Say you met Vera at a dinner last month and she's very nice.
- Ask him how long he's been with her.
- Ask him where and when he's going to propose.
- Wish him luck.
Speak for 45 seconds - 1 minute
Reveal sample answer
- ¿De verdad? ¡Es una noticia buenísima!
