It is Friday night.
Diego, Rafa, Lucía, and Tomás have dinner at Tomás’s house.
Comen, beben vino y ríen como siempre.
They eat, drink wine, and laugh as always.
—Vamos a jugar a algo —dice Diego—. Cada uno confiesa un secreto. Algo que nunca ha contado al grupo.
“Let’s play something,” says Diego. “Each one confesses a secret. Something they have never told the group.”
“Me first,” says Lucía. “Tomás, do you remember the anonymous love letter from work, last year? You never found out who wrote it?”
—No... nunca. ¿Por qué?
“No... never. Why?”
—Porque la escribí yo. Como broma.
“Because I wrote it. As a joke.”
—¿QUÉ? ¿Tú la escribiste? ¡Pensé que la escribió Lola!
“WHAT? You wrote it? I thought Lola wrote it!”
“I know, sorry. But think... afterward you bought new clothes, you changed your hairstyle... I decided not to tell you the truth.”
—¡No lo creo! ¡Compré hasta colonia! ¡Todo por una carta falsa! —dice Tomás.
“I can’t believe it! I even bought cologne! All for a fake letter!” says Tomás.
—Tomás, piensa. Esa carta te cambió la vida. Eres un hombre nuevo —dice Diego.

Lucía mira a Tomás con tristeza.
Lucía looks at Tomás with sadness.
—Tío, ¿por qué no nos contaste nada?
“Dude, why didn’t you tell us anything?”
—Porque me da vergüenza.
“Because I’m embarrassed.”
Lucía abraza a Tomás y Diego se levanta.
Lucía hugs Tomás, and Diego stands up.
—Ahora yo.
“Now me. Last week, Marta and I traveled to a village on the coast. We booked a hotel with a view of the sea. We had dinner on the beach, we walked for hours, we drank a lot of wine... guys, the best week of my life. And on the last night I asked her: will you marry me?”
—¿Y? ¿Qué contestó? —pregunta Lucía impaciente.
“And? What did she answer?” asks Lucía impatiently.
—Pues... aceptó.
“Well... she accepted.”

Rafa doesn’t answer, and Diego’s smile disappears little by little.

He sends it and leaves the phone on the table.
—¿Cómo es el hombre? —pregunta Diego.
“What does the man look like?” asks Diego.
—Alto, pelo oscuro. Pero espera... esa noche tomé una foto.

He took his jacket and ran toward the door.
Lucía, Tomás, and Rafa fall silent.
El juego de confesiones ha terminado.
The game of confessions has ended.
Question 1
Your friend asks about Lucía. Reply in Spanish: Last year Lucía wrote an anonymous love letter. She wrote it as a joke.
Notes:
- Keep carta de amor together and put anónima at the end: una carta de amor anónima.
- Como broma and de broma both work.
Question 2
You meet Rafa a week after the dinner. Ask him in Spanish: When did you find Marta with the man? Did you take a photo? Why did you wait three months?
Notes:
- Spanish has no word for "did": "Did you take a photo?" is just ¿Tomaste una foto?
- Use encontraste, without an extra s. Encontrastes is wrong.
Question 3
Lucía asks you about last weekend. Answer in Spanish: Last Saturday I had dinner at a friend's house. We ate paella and talked a lot. I went back home at midnight.
Notes:
- For "I had dinner", use cené. Tuve la cena is wrong.
- Here, el sábado pasado shows that hablamos means "we talked." With comer it changes: comemos is "we eat," comimos is "we ate."
Question 4
Translate to Spanish (the last question is for one friend): Last Friday the four friends had dinner at Tomás's house. They ate, drank wine and talked a lot. I called them on Saturday. Did you call them too?
Comieron, bebieron vino y hablaron mucho. Yo los llamé el sábado. ¿Tú también los llamaste?
Notes:
- -er and -ir verbs share the same endings in this past: comieron, bebieron, vivieron.
- Yo and tú show who did what: Yo los llamé. ¿Tú también los llamaste? ¿También los llamaste tú? is also correct.
Question 5
Translate to Spanish: Tomás lost his job four months ago. He decided to go back to his parents' house. Last month he sent more than a hundred résumés, but the companies didn't answer. Last night he sent ten more.
Example: Tomás perdió su trabajo hace cuatro meses.
Notes:
- "Four months ago" is hace cuatro meses. It can also open the sentence: Hace cuatro meses (que) Tomás perdió su trabajo.
- "More than" before a number is más de, not más que: más de cien.
- Envío means "I send" and envió means "he sent." Same letters; only the accent moves.
Question 6
You are Diego. Tell your friends in Spanish: Last week Marta and I traveled to a town on the coast. We had dinner on the beach and walked for hours. On the last night we decided to get married. Did you receive my photos yesterday?
Notes:
- "Walked for hours" → caminamos durante horas. Para horas is wrong.
- Use casarnos for Marta y yo: decidimos casarnos.
- Vosotros → recibisteis. Ustedes → recibieron. Both are correct.
Welcome to a dinner full of secrets! Step into Diego, Rafa, Lucía and Tomás's world, then tell the whole story to friends who want to play a very dangerous game.
