And now that he has lost Camila, he has finally understood the price of his adventure.
Question 1
Your friend asks about David. Reply in Spanish: David has already bought a house. He has always worked at the same company.
Example: David ya ha comprado una casa. Siempre ha trabajado en la misma empresa.
Notes:
- Ya and siempre go before ha: ya ha comprado, siempre ha trabajado. English puts "already" and "always" in the middle, but Spanish doesn't. Ya can also go at the end: ha comprado ya.
Question 2
You meet María at the café. Ask her in Spanish: Have you ever eaten paella? Have you ever been to Madrid? Have you ever traveled by plane?
Example: ¿Alguna vez has comido paella? ¿Has estado alguna vez en Madrid? ¿Alguna vez has viajado en avión?
Notes:
- ¿Has...? looks like English "has", but it means "you have".
- Alguna vez means "ever". It can go first or later: ¿Alguna vez has viajado en avión? or ¿Has viajado alguna vez en avión?
- "Been to" a place is estar en: ¿Has estado en Madrid? = Have you been to Madrid?
Question 3
Marcelo asks about your day. Answer in Spanish: Today I got up early. I have already had lunch. I have not studied Spanish yet.
Example: Hoy me he levantado temprano/pronto. Ya he comido/almorzado. Todavía no he estudiado español.
Notes:
- Me goes before he: me he levantado. "He me levantado" is wrong. The same goes for te has, se ha and the rest.
- In Spain, comer often means "have lunch", so ya he comido means you've had lunch. In much of Latin America, people say almorzar.
- Todavía no means "not yet". You can also put todavía at the end: No he estudiado español todavía.
Question 4
Translate to Spanish: This morning I have written an email. Camila has not said anything. The bakery has not opened yet. What have you done today?
Example: Esta mañana he escrito un correo/email. Camila no ha dicho nada. La panadería todavía no ha abierto. ¿Qué has hecho hoy?
Notes:
- Escrito, dicho, hecho and abierto don't follow the usual -ado / -ido rule, so learn them together. Don't say "escribido", "decido", "hacido" or "abrido".
- Hacer means both "do" and "make": ¿Qué has hecho hoy? is "What have you done today?"
Question 5
Translate to Spanish: David and Camila went to the movies today. Camila kissed David. Then they walked around the village. David is happy, but he also feels terrible.
Example: Hoy David y Camila han ido al cine. Camila ha besado a David. Después han caminado por el pueblo. David está contento/feliz, pero también se siente fatal/terrible.
Notes:
- Ir changes a lot in Spanish, but here it's simple: han ido.
- Ha besado a David needs the a, because David is a person. With things, no a: ha comprado una casa.
- In Spain, people use this form for things that happened today. In much of Latin America, people often use a different past form, which you'll learn later. Both are correct.
Question 6
You are Marcelo. You meet David and María at the café. Tell David in Spanish: I have traveled to fifteen countries, but I have never forgotten Camila. Now I have come back. You have married her. You have broken our friendship.
Example: He viajado a quince países, pero nunca he olvidado a Camila. Ahora he vuelto. Te has casado con ella. Has roto nuestra amistad.
Notes:
- Nunca goes before he: nunca he olvidado. You can also put it at the end, with no at the start: no he olvidado nunca.
- "Marry someone" is casarse con: te has casado con ella. Never "casarse a".
- Vuelto (from volver) and roto (from romper) also break the -ido rule: he vuelto, has roto.
