At that moment, someone trips next to him, and a coffee falls on his T-shirt.
—¡Dios mío! ¡Lo siento muchísimo! ¡Perdona, perdona!
“Oh my God! I’m so sorry! Sorry, sorry!” says a girl, looking for napkins everywhere.
The girl has red hair, blue eyes, and a huge smile that doesn’t disappear even when she is apologizing.
Rubén la mira y empieza a reírse.
Rubén looks at her and starts to laugh.
—¿Te estás riendo? —dice ella sin entender nada—. ¡Te acabo de tirar un café encima!
“Are you laughing?” she says, without understanding anything. “I just spilled a coffee on you!”
—Tranquila, no te preocupes. No es lo peor que me ha pasado hoy.
“Relax, don’t worry. It’s not the worst thing that has happened to me today.”
—¿No es lo peor? ¿Qué te ha pasado?
“It’s not the worst? What happened to you?”
“It’s been a pretty horrible morning. I’ve missed my flight, but not only the flight: I’ve also lost my suitcase with all the documents. And besides, when I left home, neither did the car start nor did the phone have any battery.”
—¿En serio? —dice ella riendo—. Me llamo Claudia.
“Really?” she says, laughing. “Well, my day isn’t going very well either. My name is Claudia.”
—Me llamo Rubén. ¿Qué te ha pasado?
“My name is Rubén. What happened to you?”
—He perdido mi vuelo también.
“I’ve missed my flight too. When I got to the airport, I realized that I didn’t have my boarding pass. I left it on the table.”
“Then we’re both in the same situation.”
“Well, yours is quite a bit worse,” says Claudia, laughing.
—Vale, yo gano —dice Rubén.
“Okay, I win,” says Rubén.
“So, either you let me buy you a coffee, or I’m going to feel very bad about your T-shirt,” says Claudia.
“Only if you don’t spill it on me again,” says Rubén jokingly.

Outside, it’s still raining. On the other hand, inside the café everything is calm and nice and warm.

Rubén looks at Claudia and thinks about everything that has happened today.
He hasn’t gone to Bilbao, nor has he signed the deal of a lifetime.
However, sitting in that café with her, none of that matters to him.
Maybe today he hasn’t lost a business opportunity, but rather he has found something better.
Because sometimes what looks like bad luck isn’t bad luck. It’s the path to where you need to be.
Question 1
Your friend asks about Rubén's company. Reply in Spanish: It isn't in Bilbao but in Alicante. It isn't big but small.
Question 2
Claudia offers to buy you a coffee. Reply in Spanish: Thank you. I don't want a coffee now but later. I like coffee, but I'm in a hurry.
Example: Gracias.
Notes:
- Sino means "instead": no ahora sino después. For any other "but", use pero: me gusta el café, pero tengo prisa.
- "I'm in a hurry" is tengo prisa, literally "I have hurry". In much of Latin America, people say estoy apurado.
Question 3
Claudia asks about your morning. Answer in Spanish: Today I have lost not only my suitcase but also my charger. Now I'm going to go back home either by bus or on foot.
Notes:
- No solo goes before la maleta, and sino también goes before el cargador. You can also start with No solo: No solo he perdido la maleta sino también el cargador.
- Put o before each choice: o en autobús o a pie.
- The bus takes en: en autobús. On foot is a pie. En pie means "standing", so "o en autobús o en pie" is wrong.
Question 4
Translate to Spanish: Rubén's suit isn't clean but stained. His T-shirt, on the other hand, is clean. He has neither time nor another suit.
Notes:
- En cambio can go in the middle or at the start: su camiseta, en cambio, está limpia. En cambio, su camiseta está limpia.
- No goes first, then ni before each thing: no tiene ni tiempo ni otro traje. You can drop the first ni: no tiene tiempo ni otro traje.
- A T-shirt is una camiseta in Spain. In Argentina it's una remera. In Mexico it's una playera.
Question 5
Translate to Spanish: Rubén turns the key, but the car doesn't start. On top of that, it starts to rain, and he doesn't have an umbrella. He doesn't wait, but rather runs to the bus stop.
Notes:
- For a car, "start" is arrancar: el coche no arranca. "El coche no empieza" is wrong.
- When sino comes before what someone does, add que: no espera, sino que corre. "No espera sino corre" is wrong.
- Se pone a llover and empieza a llover both mean "it starts to rain".
Question 6
You are Rubén. Tell Claudia in Spanish: Today I haven't gone to Bilbao, nor have I signed the contract. However, I'm happy. I haven't lost a business opportunity, but rather I have found something better. Thank you for the coffee.
Example: Hoy no he ido a Bilbao ni he firmado el contrato. Sin embargo, estoy contento/feliz. No he perdido una oportunidad de negocio, sino que he encontrado algo mejor. Gracias por el café.
Notes:
- Ni replaces y no: no he ido a Bilbao ni he firmado el contrato. "Ni no he firmado" is wrong.
- "Business opportunity" is oportunidad de negocio, literally "opportunity of business". "Negocio oportunidad" is wrong.
