Luego miró a Ignacio y a Toni.
Estaban <span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="wrecked" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">destruidos</span> y sucios pero sonrieron.

Because some kids are impossible to put up with. And also impossible to forget.
Question 1
Your friend asks about the story. Reply in Spanish: It was three in the morning. Dani woke up.
Example: Eran las tres de la mañana. Dani se despertó.
Notes:
- Use eran for the time in a story: Eran las tres de la mañana. For one o'clock it's era: Era la una.
- Use se despertó for what Dani did at that moment. Eran las tres just sets the scene.
Question 2
You meet Dani on Monday. Ask him in Spanish: Were you hungry when Toni came back from the gas station? Did you order a pizza without gluten?
Notes:
- Tenías hambre describes how you were. Volvió and pediste are what happened.
- To order food is pedir: pedir una pizza.
Question 3
Dani asks you about last night. Answer in Spanish: Last night I was reading at home when the phone rang. It was my friend Ana.
Notes:
- Use estaba leyendo or leía for what you were in the middle of. Both are correct. Use sonó for what cut in: Estaba leyendo cuando sonó el teléfono.
- Use era to say who it was: Era mi amiga Ana.
Question 4
Translate to Spanish: Ignacio was driving. Toni was looking out the window. Suddenly, Dani asked a question. They didn't answer.
Example: Ignacio conducía. Toni miraba por la ventana. De repente, Dani hizo una pregunta. No contestaron.
Notes:
- Use hacer with a question: Dani hizo una pregunta. "Dani preguntó una pregunta" is wrong.
- In much of Latin America, people say manejaba instead of conducía.
- Use por for "out the window": Toni miraba por la ventana.
Question 5
Translate to Spanish: While Ignacio was talking on the phone, Dani found the ransom note on the table. The note had two mistakes. Ignacio and Toni couldn't believe it.
Ignacio y Toni no podían creerlo.
Notes:
- Mientras goes with what was going on: hablaba. What happened in the middle of it: encontró.
- "Couldn't believe it" is no podían creerlo. The lo goes on the end of creer.
Question 6
You are Dani. Tell your mother in Spanish: On Sunday, Ignacio and Toni took me to school. It was closed. They were dirty and very tired. I gave them a hug. I invited them to my house to swim in the pool.
Example: El domingo, Ignacio y Toni me llevaron al colegio. Estaba cerrado.
Notes:
- Use les with dar and los with invitar: Les di un abrazo. Los invité a mi casa. In Spain you'll also hear Les invité.
- Swimming pool is piscina in Spain, alberca in Mexico and pileta in Argentina.
- Use llevar when someone takes you somewhere: Me llevaron al colegio. "Me tomaron al colegio" is wrong.
Welcome to the worst kidnapping in history! Step into Ignacio, Toni and Dani's world, then tell the whole story to a friend who thinks babysitting is easy.
