Desde pequeña le encanta hacer bolsos con <span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="jeans" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">vaqueros</span> viejos y <span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="to embroider on them" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">bordarles</span> flores <span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="by hand" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">a mano</span>.

<span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="there are too many" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">Hay demasiados</span> bolsos <span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="on the market" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">en el mercado</span> y el tuyo no es nada especial.

Va a Barcelona y habla con varios bancos e <span class="vocab-tooltip" fb-tooltip="true" fb-tooltip-message="investors" fb-tooltip-position="top" fb-tooltip-theme="dark" fb-tooltip-animation="shift-away" fb-tooltip-show-delay="100" fb-tooltip-arrow="rounded">inversores</span>.

Rocío is twenty-four years old and lives in a little village near Barcelona.

Since she was little, she has loved making bags out of old jeans and embroidering flowers on them by hand.

Every bag is different, and it takes her several days to make one.

Her friends always tell her the same thing: “Rocío, your bags are really great. You should sell them.”

Un día, Rocío decide intentarlo.

One day, Rocío decides to try.

But she needs money to buy more materials, rent a space, and hire someone to help her.

The first thing she does is talk to her Uncle Alfredo, who has a lot of money and several companies.

“Uncle, I have an idea. I want to sell my bags. I just need a little money to start.”

Uncle Alfredo looks at the bag, laughs, and says:

Eres demasiado joven y no tienes experiencia suficiente.

“Niece, it’s the worst idea I’ve heard in a long time. There are too many bags on the market, and yours isn’t anything special. Besides, they’re quite ugly. Nobody is going to pay for a bag made from old clothes. You’re too young, and you don’t have enough experience. Listen to me: find a normal job and stop wasting time.”

Rocío takes her bag from the table and leaves without saying anything.

Va a Barcelona y habla con varios bancos e inversores.

She goes to Barcelona and talks to several banks and investors.

They all tell her the same thing: too risky, there isn’t enough demand, and there’s too much competition.

Es entonces cuando Rocío decide hacerlo sola.

It’s then that Rocío decides to do it alone.

She starts working as a waitress to earn money and buy materials, and at night she makes bags at her kitchen table.

Trabaja muchas horas y duerme muy poco.

She works many hours and sleeps very little.

Every Saturday, Rocío goes to Barcelona with her bags.

She puts them on a blanket on the ground like the street vendors and waits.

She has been doing the same thing for three Saturdays, and nobody has bought anything from her.

On the fourth Saturday, while she is on the Ramblas with her blanket on the ground, a very elegant woman comes over.

“Oh my God! They’re the most beautiful bags I’ve ever seen in my life. What are they made of?”

—Gracias, señora. De vaqueros reciclados. Y las flores están bordadas a mano.

“Thank you, ma’am. From recycled jeans. And the flowers are embroidered by hand.”

—¿Los haces tú?

“Do you make them yourself?”

—Sí. Cada bolso tarda tres días en hacerse.

“Yes. Each bag takes three days to make.”

—¡Es increíble! Quiero comprar uno. ¿Cuánto cuestan?

“That’s incredible! I want to buy one. How much do they cost?”

—Doscientos cincuenta euros.

“Two hundred fifty euros.”

—¿Doscientos cincuenta?

“Two hundred fifty? That’s very cheap! These bags are unique and of really great quality. You should charge much more.”

The woman gives her three hundred euros, takes a bag, and asks her:

—¿Tienes alguna página en las redes sociales?

“Do you have a page on social media?”

“Yes, but I only have fifty followers,” says Rocío.

—Dámela.

“Give it to me.”

What Rocío doesn’t know is that that woman is a famous actress with tons of followers online.

That same night, she posts a photo with the bag on her page.

The next morning, Rocío looks at her phone and can’t believe it.

She has more than two thousand messages from people who want to buy her bags.

And her page has gone from fifty followers to more than one hundred thousand in a single night.

—¡Dios mío! ¡Cuántos mensajes! ¡Cuántos seguidores! —grita Rocío mientras salta y abraza a su madre.

“Oh my God! So many messages! So many followers!” shouts Rocío as she jumps and hugs her mother.

But she has a huge problem: she has two thousand orders and only five bags.

She doesn’t have enough materials or money to buy what she needs.

“Mom, how am I going to get money to make two thousand bags?”

“People pay first, and you buy the material afterward with that money.”

Rocío abraza a su madre.

Rocío hugs her mother.

—¡Eres un genio, mamá! ¿Cómo no pensé en eso antes?

“You’re a genius, Mom! Why didn’t I think of that before?”

That same night, Rocío opens an online store and prices each bag at five hundred euros.

In the first week, she sells more than five thousand bags for a total of more than two million euros.

But the orders come in so fast that Rocío has to raise the price to one thousand five hundred euros.

A lot of people tell her that her bags are too expensive, but people keep buying.

In a short time, Rocío’s bags become the most popular in Spain.

Fashion magazines write about her: “The youngest businesswoman of the year.” “The best bag of the year.” “The biggest success in Spanish fashion.” “The best-selling brand of the season.”

Rocío está contentísima.

Rocío is thrilled.

In less than a month, she went from selling bags on the ground to having her own factory with more than thirty workers and orders from all over Europe.

One day, in her office, Rocío gets a call from her Uncle Alfredo.

—Sobrina, enhorabuena.

“Niece, congratulations.”

—Gracias, tío. ¿Qué quieres?

“Thanks, Uncle. What do you want?”

—Me gustaría tener una reunión contigo.

“I would like to have a meeting with you.”

—¿Una reunión? ¿Para qué?

“A meeting? What for?”

“It’s just that... I would like to invest in your company. I could help you a lot.”

“But Uncle, my bags are quite ugly, remember?”

—Sobrina, perdóname. Yo pensé que...

“Niece, forgive me. I thought that...”

—No te preocupes, tío. Mejor no pierdas tu tiempo.

“Don’t worry, Uncle. But like you told me, this is too risky. Better not waste your time.”

Rocío hangs up and looks out the window of her office.

She thinks about everyone who told her no: her uncle, the banks, the investors.

They all told her that she was too young, too risky, and that she didn’t have enough experience.

Todos le dijeron que no era suficiente.

They all told her that she wasn’t enough.

Pero ella siempre creyó que podía hacerlo. Y eso fue más que suficiente.

But she always believed that she could do it. And that was more than enough.

Example: Tiene mucho dinero. Cree que Rocío es demasiado joven.

Notes:

  • "A lot of" is mucho: mucho dinero. "Mucho de dinero" is wrong.
  • "Too" is demasiado: demasiado joven. Muy joven means "very young".

Example: Trabajas demasiadas horas. No tienes suficiente tiempo para ti. Tu vida es demasiado difícil.

Notes:

  • With horas, it's demasiadas: demasiadas horas. With difícil, it stays demasiado: demasiado difícil. "Demasiada difícil" is wrong.
  • Suficiente goes before or after tiempo: suficiente tiempo, tiempo suficiente. Bastante tiempo works too.
  • "For yourself" is para ti: tiempo para ti. "Para tú" is wrong.

Example: Tu bolso es bonitísimo. La calidad es buenísima. Pero es demasiado caro para mí.

Notes:

  • Drop the last letter and add -ísimo: bonito → bonitísimo, bueno → buenísimo. The accent always goes on the í.
  • Don't add muy. Bonitísimo already means "very beautiful". "Muy bonitísimo" is wrong.

Example: Rocío no tiene suficientes materiales. Su mesa es bastante pequeña. Duerme muy poco y trabaja muchísimo.

Notes:

  • With materiales, add an s: suficientes materiales. "Suficiente materiales" is wrong.
  • Before pequeña, bastante means "quite": bastante pequeña.
  • Mucho becomes muchísimo: trabaja muchísimo. After a verb, it doesn't change.

Notes:

  • "In the world" is del mundo: la peor idea del mundo.
  • Enseña and muestra both work for "shows".

No pierdas tu tiempo.

Notes:

  • After me dijiste que, use eran and era: me dijiste que mis bolsos eran bastante feos.
  • Contentísima: for a woman, it ends in -ísima.
  • "Waste time" is perder el tiempo: no pierdas tu tiempo.
