Fabián leaves the bar and walks home. He's not so sad anymore.

He thinks about Isadora and that's why he smiles.
Question 1
Your friend asks why Fabián goes to a bar. Reply in Spanish: Rocío is not in love with Fabián. That's why he goes to the bar.
Example: Rocío no está enamorada de Fabián. Por eso va al bar.
Notes:
- "Porque" = because (gives the reason). "Por eso" = that's why (gives the result). They work as a pair: porque explains WHY, por eso explains WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.
- "Porque" is one word when it means "because." Two words "por qué" when it's a question: "¿Por qué estás triste?" → "Porque Rocío no está enamorada."
Question 2
Isadora asks Fabián why he is sad. Reply as Fabián in Spanish: I am sad because my girlfriend is leaving for Barcelona. Besides, she has a new job. That's why I am here.
Example: Estoy triste porque mi novia se va a Barcelona. Además, tiene un trabajo nuevo. Por eso estoy aquí.
Notes:
- "Se va" = is leaving / is going away. "Va" = is going. "Mi novia se va" means she's leaving for good. "Mi novia va a Barcelona" just means she's going there. The "se" adds that feeling of departure.
- "Además" = besides / on top of that. It piles on extra information: she's leaving AND ALSO has a new job. Use it when you want to add weight to your point and not just list facts.
Question 3
A friend asks why you study Spanish. Answer in Spanish: I study Spanish because I like it. But it is difficult. That's why I study every day.
Example: Estudio español porque me gusta. Pero es difícil. Por eso estudio todos los días.
Notes:
- "Pero" flips the direction. Everything before it points one way ("I like it"), everything after points the other ("it's difficult").
- "Todos los días" = every day. You'll also hear "cada día" which means the same thing. Both work but "todos los días" is more common in conversation.
Question 4
Translate to Spanish: Rocío has a new job. Besides, she is not in love. However, Fabián is in love. That's why he is sad.
Example: Rocío tiene un trabajo nuevo. Además, no está enamorada. Sin embargo, Fabián está enamorado. Por eso está triste.
Notes:
- "Sin embargo" = however. It's stronger than "pero." "Pero" is everyday contrast. "Sin embargo" is when the contrast is surprising or important: she's NOT in love, HOWEVER he IS.
- "Enamorada" for Rocío, "enamorado" for Fabián. The ending matches the person and not the feeling.
Question 5
Translate to Spanish: Fabián buys flowers because it is his girlfriend's birthday. But Rocío doesn't want the flowers. Besides, she has a new job in Barcelona. So she is leaving for Barcelona.
Example: Fabián compra flores porque es el cumpleaños de su novia. Pero Rocío no quiere las flores. Además, tiene un trabajo nuevo en Barcelona. Entonces se va a Barcelona.
Notes:
- "Entonces" = so / then. Close to "por eso" but lighter. "Por eso" points hard at the cause: "THAT'S WHY she's leaving." "Entonces" just moves things forward: "So, she's leaving." Both work here but entonces feels more like storytelling.
- "El cumpleaños DE su novia" → "de" shows whose birthday it is. Same pattern as "la casa de Fabián" or "el bar de la esquina." Spanish uses "de" where English uses 's.
Question 6
Translate to Spanish: Fabián walks home. He still thinks about Rocío. However, he also thinks about Isadora. The next day, he goes to the bar because he wants to talk with Isadora.
Example: Fabián camina a casa. Todavía piensa en Rocío. Sin embargo, también piensa en Isadora. Al día siguiente, va al bar porque quiere hablar con Isadora.
Notes:
- "Pensar EN" = to think ABOUT. Always "en" after pensar: "Piensa en Rocío," "pienso en ti." Drop the "en" and it changes meaning: "Pienso que es buena idea" = I think (that) it's a good idea.
- "Todavía" = still (holding onto the past). "También" = also (opening up to something new). Two small words that show that Fabián has feelings for two girls.
Flowers, heartbreak and churros con chocolate. Tonight you're buying bouquets, explaining breakups, planning your dream night and telling a florist exactly why flowers don't always work.

1. Fabián's Cerveza Was Almost Certainly a Caña
Fabián walks into a bar after the worst afternoon of his life and orders "una cerveza."
Fair enough. But here's the thing… in Spain almost nobody actually says that.
The word you'll hear more than any other in a Spanish bar
When Spaniards want a beer they don't ask for "a beer." They ask for a size.
And the default size is a caña.
A caña is a small glass of draft beer. About 200ml… which is roughly half a pint. It looks tiny the first time you see one. You'll think they made a mistake.
They didn't.
The logic is simple and kind of brilliant. Spain is hot. Beer gets warm fast. A caña is small enough to drink before it loses its chill. You finish it, order another one and that one's ice cold too.
Your beer is never warm. Ever.
But a caña is just the beginning. Spain has an entire vocabulary for beer sizes… and it changes depending on where you are:
- Caña - the standard (~200ml draft)
- Doble - double the caña. For when you're really thirsty
- Tubo - a taller, narrower glass (~330ml). Common in the north
- Jarra - a mug. Closest thing to a pint you'll find
- Zurito - even smaller than a caña. Basque Country only. Basically a few sips
- Corto - same idea as the zurito but in León
- Penalti - same idea again but in Aragón
Same drink. Different name. Different glass. Depending on the city.
So when you eventually walk into a bar in Spain… don't say "una cerveza."
Say "una caña, por favor." You'll sound like you know what you're doing.
Every region has its beer
Here's something that surprises people.
Spain is a wine country… but Spaniards drink a lot of beer. And every region has its own.
- Mahou - Madrid's beer. Founded in 1890. If you're in the capital this is what shows up
- Estrella Galicia - From Galicia. Founded in 1906. Still family-owned. Ask anyone in Spain which beer is best and a lot of them will say this one (I'd pick it every time)
- Estrella Damm - Barcelona and Catalonia. Founded in 1876. The oldest on this list
- Cruzcampo - Seville and southern Spain. Founded in 1904.
- Alhambra - Granada. Founded in 1925. Their Reserva 1925 is worth trying if you like something with more flavour
- Ambar - Zaragoza and Aragón. A bit less known outside the region but locals are proud of it
People are loyal to their local beer. Remember how we talked about soccer clubs in Spain? Same energy.
You support your city's team and you drink your city's beer. Order a Cruzcampo in Barcelona and you might get a look. Order an Estrella Damm in Seville and… same thing.
It's not serious. But it's not not serious either.
Two more words worth knowing
Clara. That's a beer mixed with lemon soda. Spain's version of a shandy. When it's 38 degrees outside and a full beer feels like too much… a clara is perfect.
You can ask for it "con limón" (with lemon soda) or "con casera" (with a fizzy lemonade called La Casera).
Cerveza sin. Alcohol-free beer. Way more common in Spain than you'd expect. Nobody looks at you funny for ordering one. It's just… normal.
Plenty of people order it at lunch because they're going back to work or during the week because they want the ritual without the alcohol.
The bar was exactly where Fabián needed to be
Remember ir de cañas from the Roberto story? That whole tradition of hopping from bar to bar with friends?
Spain has roughly one bar for every 175 to 200 people. That's one of the highest ratios in the world.
Bars aren't just places to drink. They're where people go to eat breakfast, have a coffee, watch a football match, meet friends after work or just sit for a while when they need to not be alone.
Fabián walked into that bar heartbroken and carrying flowers meant for someone else.
And Isadora sat down, listened and talked with him for a long time.
In Spain… that's what a bar is for.
2. Fabián's Next Date Is a Very Spanish Idea
The next day Fabián comes back to the bar. But this time he doesn't want a beer.
He wants to take Isadora out for churros con chocolate.
And that… is one of the most Spanish things he could have said.
What churros actually are
Churros are fried dough. That's it. Flour, water, salt.
The dough gets pushed through a star-shaped nozzle (which gives it those ridges) and dropped into hot oil until it's golden and crispy.
No cinnamon. No sugar coating. That's the American and Latin American version.
In Spain, churros are plain or dusted with just a little sugar. The star of the show is what you dip them in.
In some parts of southern Spain, especially Seville, people call them calentitos ("little hot ones") instead.
The chocolate is nothing like what you're imagining
Forget everything you know about hot chocolate.
Spanish chocolate a la taza is not a drink. It's closer to warm pudding.
It's made with real dark chocolate (at least 60-70% cacao), whole milk and cornstarch… which is what makes it so thick.
Some places serve it so dense you can stand a spoon in it. American-style hot cocoa made from powder wouldn't pass as chocolate in any churrería in Spain
You dip the churro in. The chocolate coats it. And then you eat something that is warm, crunchy, rich… and you immediately want another one.
When Spaniards eat churros
This is the fun part. Churros aren't specific to one time of day.
There are three classic churro moments in Spain:
Breakfast. A plate of churros with a cup of thick chocolate or a café con leche. Especially on weekends with family. Some churrerías (shops that specialise in churros) open at 6 or 7 AM.
Merienda. That's the late-afternoon snack, around 5 or 6 PM. A very Spanish tradition. Churros con chocolate is one of the most popular merienda options… especially in winter.
Late night. After a night out, finding a churrería at 4 or 5 AM and eating churros before going home is a tradition across Spain. Believe me… it's the best possible ending to a long night.
The most famous churrería in Spain
If you're ever in Madrid there's one place you have to go (the same one I asked you to recommend to Sofía in story 1, remember?).
Chocolatería San Ginés.
- Open since 1894
- Open 24 hours. Every day. Including New Year's
- Located in a narrow alley between Puerta del Sol and the Royal Theatre
- White marble tables, tiled walls, photographs everywhere. It looks like it hasn't changed in a hundred years
- Famous for its chocolate con churros
- It started as the spot where people went after the theatre next door. The theatre became a nightclub. The tradition didn't change. People still go after a night out
There's usually a queue. Don't let it put you off… it moves fast. And the moment you sit down and dip your first churro into that chocolate, you'll understand why people have been coming here for over 130 years.
Churros are not a solo activity
There's an unwritten rule about churros con chocolate in Spain. You don't go alone.
It's something you do with someone. You sit, you share a plate, you talk while the chocolate's still warm.
For a first date… that's kind of perfect. No dress code. No awkward menu decisions. Just two people and a plate of churros and chocolate between them.
Fabián knew exactly what he was doing. And honestly… so did Isadora when she said yes.
Did You Know?
- 🍫 Spain was the first country in Europe to taste chocolate. Explorers brought cacao back from the Americas in the early 1500s and Spain kept the recipe secret for almost 100 years before it reached the rest of Europe
- ⭐ Three of Spain's biggest beer brands have "Estrella" (star) in the name… Estrella Damm, Estrella Galicia and Estrella de Levante. They're completely separate companies from different regions and they compete with each other
- 🍷 Spain is one of the world's biggest wine producers… but Spaniards actually drink more beer than wine
- 🌎 In Latin America churros are usually coated in cinnamon sugar and filled with dulce de leche, chocolate or guava. In Spain… they're almost always plain. The dipping chocolate does all the work
- 🍺 Estrella Damm, founded in Barcelona in 1876, is the oldest beer brand still operating in Spain. It's older than the Sagrada Familia (construction started in 1882)
